Disconcerting and nuclear-ravaged with a Motown-tinge.

Album Review: Gruff Rhys - 'Atheist Xmas'

Album Info

  • Release Date: December 19, 2011
  • Label: Turnstile
  • Fact: Gruff played three different in-store sets on the day of the EP's release.

6 / 10 There’s something rather incongruous about Gruff Rhys turning his hand to a Christmas EP, like Damien Hirst proffering a simple sketch of a fruit bowl. Luckily, though, ‘Atheist Xmas’ avoids the dreary claptrap of other offenders. ‘At The End Of The Line’ recounts December 25 with a companion “diagnosed with manic depression”, while there’s little pulling of crackers in the nuclear-ravaged, Motown-tinged ‘Post-Apocalyptic Christmas’ as Gruff disconcertingly chirrups: “We lick our wounds to kill the hunger”. We’re guessing there’s no roast turkey round those parts, then…
